How to Make Canva Artwork Print-Ready for DTF
Simple steps for creating better PNG files for DTF transfer printing
Canva is a helpful tool for creating basic shirt designs, logos, team graphics, event shirts, and small business artwork. But a Canva PNG is not automatically ready for DTF printing.
For best results, your Canva file should be:
Correct size + high enough resolution + transparent background + clean edges
Follow these steps before sending artwork for DTF printing.
Step 1: Start With Custom Size
From the Canva home screen, choose Custom size.
Do not start with a social media template unless you know how to resize it for garment printing.
Common DTF print sizes:
| Print Location | Suggested Size |
|---|---|
| Left chest | 3"–4" wide |
| Youth shirt front | 8"–9" wide |
| Adult shirt front | 10"–12" wide |
| Oversized front | 13" or wider |
| Sleeve print | Narrow and long |
| Hat or small item | Smaller and simplified |
Step 2: Change the Units to Inches
Canva may default to pixels.
For DTF artwork, it is usually easier to design by final print size.
In the Custom Size window:
-
Enter your design width
-
Enter your design height
-
Change the unit dropdown to in
-
Click Create new design
Example:
For an adult shirt front, you might create an 11" × 11" or 12" × 12" design.
The artwork does not have to fill the full canvas, but the canvas should be close to the final print size.
Step 3: Add or Create Your Design
Upload, place, or create your artwork inside the Canva design.
Before exporting, check:
-
Is the design the correct size?
-
Is the text readable?
-
Are the edges clean?
-
Are any logos or uploaded images sharp?
-
Is there a white, black, or colored box behind the design?
If the design has a background, use BG Remover when needed.
Important: A colored box, white box, or background image may print as part of the DTF transfer if it is not removed.
Proof the Artwork Before Saving
Before you save or download, zoom in and inspect the design.
Check:
☐ Is all text spelled correctly?
☐ Is the artwork centered and sized correctly?
☐ Is the background removed?
☐ Are there unwanted shadows, boxes, borders, or leftover pixels?
☐ Is the design sharp enough for the final print size?
☐ Is the artwork clean around the edges?
Do not wait until after printing to find artwork problems.
Step 4: Click Save to Open the PNG Settings
After the artwork is proofed and approved, click Save to open the PNG export settings.
The default Canva PNG settings are usually not the best settings for DTF printing.
Do not simply accept the default settings without checking them.
Step 5: Choose PNG and Increase the Image Size
In the Save / Download settings:
-
Set the file type to PNG
-
Increase the size for better print quality
-
Use at least 300 pixels per inch of final print width
-
For most T-shirt graphics, 3000–3500 pixels wide is a safe target
Examples:
| Final Print Width | Minimum Pixel Width |
|---|---|
| 4" left chest | 1200 px |
| 8" youth front | 2400 px |
| 10" adult front | 3000 px |
| 11" adult front | 3300 px |
| 12" adult front | 3600 px |
If you are unsure, export around 3000–3500 pixels wide for most standard T-shirt graphics.
Step 6: Turn On Transparent Background
Select Transparent background.
The checkbox should be selected before downloading. In Canva, the selected box turns purple.
This is one of the most important steps.
If transparent background is not selected, the PNG may download with a white, black, or colored background box.
That box may print.
Step 7: Do Not Compress or Limit File Size
For DTF printing, artwork quality matters more than small file size.
Do not select:
-
Limit file size
-
Compress file
-
Lower quality
Compressed artwork may look softer, blurrier, or lower quality when printed.
Step 8: Save Download Settings
If Canva allows it, select Save download settings.
This helps future PNG exports use the correct settings again.
Still check the settings every time before downloading.
Step 9: Download or Share the File
After the PNG settings are correct, download the file or share it.
Best file to send:
PNG + transparent background + correct size + high resolution + clean edges
If possible, also include:
-
Final print size wanted
-
Print location
-
Canva share link
-
Garment type or color

Kolormatrix Pro Tip
A Canva PNG can still be wrong for DTF if it is too small, low resolution, or exported with a background box.
The best Canva file for DTF is a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background, created close to the final print size.
