Meet Tanya & Brian

DTF issues can be frustrating because the visible problem often isn't where the mistake started.

A print issue may show up during curing.

A cure issue may appear after pressing.

A press issue may not appear until wash testing.

We've helped shops troubleshoot thousands of production situations and learned one important lesson:

Follow the process.

This guide walks through DTF troubleshooting in the same order production happens:

  1. Print
  2. Cure
  3. Apply

Step 1: Printer Problems

Print Quality Troubleshooting

Colors Look Dull

Possible causes:

โœ” Incorrect ICC profile
โœ” Wrong media settings
โœ” Head alignment issues
โœ” Ink flow inconsistency
โœ” White underbase problems

Banding In Prints

Possible causes:

โœ” Nozzle clogs
โœ” Feed calibration issues
โœ” Head strike
โœ” Humidity changes

White Ink Problems

Possible causes:

โœ” White circulation issue
โœ” Settling ink
โœ” Maintenance skipped
โœ” Clogged channels

Ink Smearing

Possible causes:

โœ” Excessive ink load
โœ” Incorrect media settings
โœ” Head height issues

Fuzzy Edges

Possible causes:

โœ” Bidirectional alignment
โœ” Media movement
โœ” Print head position

Tanya & Brian Tip

Print problems often become cure problems later.

Always fix print quality before adjusting curing.

Step 2: Cure Problems

Shaker & Dryer Troubleshooting

Adhesive Powder Not Melting

Possible causes:

โœ” Temperature too low
โœ” Belt speed too fast
โœ” Uneven tunnel heat

Powder Falling Off Transfer

Possible causes:

โœ” Inconsistent powder application
โœ” Excess powder removal
โœ” Under-cured adhesive

Transfers Crack

Possible causes:

โœ” Under-cured adhesive
โœ” Tunnel temperature variation
โœ” Incorrect dwell time

Transfer Feels Grainy

Possible causes:

โœ” Excessive powder
โœ” Cure imbalance

Film Curling

Possible causes:

โœ” Excess heat
โœ” Humidity issues
โœ” Over-curing

Tanya & Brian Tip

More heat is not always better.

Over-curing can create as many problems as under-curing.

Step 3: Application Problems

Heat Press & Garment Troubleshooting

Transfer Washing Off

Possible causes:

โœ” Incorrect pressure
โœ” Wrong time or temperature
โœ” Under-cured transfer
โœ” Garment compatibility issue

Edges Lifting

Possible causes:

โœ” Pressure too low
โœ” Uneven press
โœ” Incorrect peel timing

Scorch Marks

Possible causes:

โœ” Excess heat
โœ” Sensitive garments

Cracking After Wash

Possible causes:

โœ” Cure imbalance
โœ” Excess stretch
โœ” Fabric mismatch

Polyester Dye Migration

Possible causes:

โœ” Temperature too high
โœ” Garment quality
โœ” Fabric limitations

Nylon Adhesion Problems

Possible causes:

โœ” Incorrect adhesive type
โœ” Low-energy surface materials
โœ” Press settings

Tanya & Brian's Production Perspective

Most DTF problems aren't caused by one machine.

Problems often start in one stage and become visible later.

Follow the process and troubleshoot in order.
