How to Clean an Encoder Strip

The encoder strip helps the printer track carriage position. Ink mist, dust and residue on the strip can contribute to carriage-position errors, image shifts, banding or inconsistent printing.

1. Position and power down the printer according to the approved maintenance procedure.
2. Locate the encoder strip without pulling or stretching it.
3. Select a clean, unused lint-free wipe.
4. Fold the wipe into a small, manageable pad.
5. Lightly dampen the wipe only when the printer procedure permits it.
6. Support the strip gently so it is not pulled out of position.
7. Wipe in one controlled direction using very light pressure.
8. Use a clean portion of the wipe for each additional pass.

3. Lightly dampen the wipe without saturating it until liquid drips.

The exact procedure varies by printer. In a typical controlled workflow:

1. Inspect and clean the capping station and surrounding maintenance area.
2. Select a clean, unused lint-free wipe.
3. Fold or position the wipe according to the approved printer procedure.
4. Apply only the amount of compatible cleaning solution required.
5. Position the wipe without forcing it into mechanical or electrical components.
6. Lock or park the printhead according to the approved procedure.
7. Confirm that the wipe and liquid cannot move into electronics or sensor areas.
8. Allow the printhead to soak for the specified period.
9. Remove and discard the contaminated wipe.
10. Return the printer to normal operating position.
11. Run a normal cleaning cycle.
